More Information about Compression Wear

What are compression stockings?

Compression stockings (also known as compression hosiery) are a medically-accepted way to relieve minor or more serious leg pain related to swelling, venous insufficiency, deep vein thrombosis, varicose veins and other conditions.

Who needs compression stockings?

Anyone, at any age, can develop a painful leg-health problem. Long periods on our feet at work, varicose or spider veins, phlebitis (blood clots occurring often in the legs), deep vein thrombosis, venous insufficiency, post-surgical edema, and pregnancy are some of the conditions that can really take a toll. Compression hosiery helps relieve the discomfort of varicose veins, venous stasis, post sclerotherapy and DVT (deep vein thrombosis). But compression hosiery can be used not only for pain it can also help improve blood circulation and better promote healing.

How do compression stockings work?

Compression stockings work by applying controlled pressure to the surface veins, keeping their diameter small and forcing blood back into the deep vein system which in turn pushes the blood uphill towards the heart. Improved blood flow aids in the healing and prevention of ulcers, swelling, venous insufficiency, deep vein thrombosis, and varicose veins.

Compression hosierywith varying levels of compression is called gradient compression stockings (or gradient compression hosiery). In these gradient compression stockings, the strongest compression is at the bottom of the stocking (near the ankle) and it gradually lightens compression to the top of the stocking.

What types of compression stockings are there?

Gradient compression stockings are available in numerous levels of compression from a variety of manufacturers. For the relief of mild symptoms and varicosities, 12-18 mmHg is recommended. To treat more chronic symptoms, and more painful varicosities, 20 to 30 mmHg is indicated. For more severe cases, and where a doctor is specifically recommending compression stockings, 30-40 mmHg is available. The most popular brands of support hosiery are Jobst compression stockings, Sigvaris compression stockings, Mediven compression stockings, and Juzo compression stockings.
