An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses and treats cardiac arrest by re-establishing an effective heart rhythm. This treatment is called defibrillation, which applies an electric shock to the entire heart muscle, uniformly clearing the electrical activity of the heart, hopefully allowing it to resynchronize. An automated external defibrillator is used in cases of cardiac arrest.
An electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG, abbreviated from the German Elektrokardiogramm) is a graphic produced by an electrocardiograph, which records the electrical activity of the heart over time. Understanding the various waves and normal vectors of depolarization and repolarization yields important diagnostic information. ECG's are the gold standard for the evaluation of cardiac arrhythmias and are used as a screening tool for ischemic heart disease during a cardiac stress test.
